How the background remover works

The tool uses an open-source AI model (ormbg, based on IS-Net research) that has learned to tell people apart from their surroundings. It looks at your photo and predicts, for every pixel, how much belongs to the subject. That prediction becomes a transparency mask, so soft edges like hair fade naturally instead of being cut with scissors.

The model runs with ONNX Runtime directly in your browser. It downloads once from this site and is then kept by your browser, so later visits start faster. Your photo is processed in memory on your device and never sent anywhere.

It works best on photos of people: portraits, selfies, team photos and product shots with a person. Objects, pets, glass and fine hair against busy backgrounds can come out less clean; a photo with a plain, contrasting background gives the best results.

Profile pictures, ID photos and product listings

For a clean profile picture, remove the background and choose a colour that matches your brand. Many ID and visa photo rules ask for a plain white or light background: choose White, then resize to the size the form asks for.

Selling online? A person or product on white looks consistent across a listing. Keep the transparent PNG if you want to place the cut-out on a design later; PNG keeps the transparency, JPG doesn't.
