Got an .avif file you can't open? This AVIF to JPG converter turns it into a regular JPG (or a PNG, if you need transparency) right in your browser. No upload, no software to install, and it handles a batch of files in one go.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Add AVIF images

Drop .avif files onto the converter or click "Choose files". You can also paste an image you copied.

  2. Choose JPG or PNG

JPG is selected by default and gives the smallest files. Pick PNG in Options to keep transparent areas.

  3. Download

Save each converted image, or download them all as a ZIP.

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is one of the newest image formats on the web. It stores pictures using the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media, a group that includes Google, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix and Amazon. At the same visual quality, AVIF files are often around half the size of JPGs and noticeably smaller than WebP.

Because of those savings, image services and big websites increasingly serve AVIF automatically to browsers that support it. That's how many people end up with an .avif file after saving a picture from a web page.

Support outside the browser is still catching up. Older versions of Windows Photos, Office, many photo editors and most upload forms don't understand AVIF yet. Converting to JPG makes the image usable everywhere.

Why use OneDropConvert?

  • Runs locally. Your browser decodes the AVIF; if it can't, a built-in decoder takes over. Either way, nothing is uploaded.
  • Two outputs. JPG for small, universal files; PNG for lossless copies with transparency.
  • No hidden data. Metadata is stripped from the converted files.
  • Batch conversion. Up to 50 AVIF files at once, downloadable as a ZIP.
  • Free and account-free.

Open AVIF files on Windows, Mac and phones

If double-clicking an .avif file gives you an error, the quickest fix is to convert it rather than hunt for codecs. Drop the file here in any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, and you'll have a JPG in a couple of seconds.

On Windows, AVIF opens in recent builds of the Photos app once the "AV1 Video Extension" is installed from the Microsoft Store. On a Mac, recent versions of Preview open AVIF. But even when your own computer can view it, the person you send it to may not, so a JPG is the polite choice for sharing.

Choose AVIF to PNG when the image has a transparent background or when you plan to edit it, since PNG won't add any extra compression. For an overview of when each format makes sense, see AVIF vs WebP vs JPG.

FAQ

How do I open an AVIF file?

Any current web browser can display AVIF. To use it in other apps, convert it to JPG or PNG here; the result opens everywhere.

Should I convert AVIF to JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos you want to share or upload, since it is far smaller. PNG if the image has transparency or you want a lossless copy for editing.

Why is the JPG larger than the AVIF?

AVIF is a newer, more efficient format. The same picture needs more bytes as a JPG. A JPG two or three times the size is normal.

It says my browser can't decode AVIF. What now?

That happens only on old browsers. Update your browser, or open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

Are animated AVIF files supported?

The first frame is converted to a still image. Animation is not carried over to JPG or PNG.

Is my image uploaded to convert it?

No. Everything happens on your device. The page can only contact our own server and, if you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics. Neither ever receives your images.
